HISTORY OF VALENTINE’S DAY? WHY DO WE CELEBRATE VALENTINE’S DAY -FACTS AND ORIGIN?
MOST AWAITED FEBRUARY MONTH THE 14TH,
SYMBOL OF LOVE- MESSAGES
After Christmas in December and New Year in January
the most awaited month is February that has become a symbol of Love Month which
was earlier known for being the month of 28 days and 29 days in leap year.
February and Valentine has become synonyms of each other.14th February means
Valentine’s Day, a day of sending love messages to our partners, family and
friends. It has become a Global Celebration in small towns as well as in big
cities It is not only a craze among the youths but also all ages of people
young and old.
In - fact it was originated as a Christian feast day
in the honor of a Christian Martyrs Saint Valentine.It is celebrated annually by
sending messages of love, friendship and admiration. Saint Valentine was a Catholic priest who lived in Rome in the 3rd century. There are many
stories related to St. Valentine but over time it has grown into a legend.
STORY OF SAINT VALENTINE IN ROME
During St. Valentine’s life many Romans were converting
to Christians but the Emperor Claudius II who was a Pagan (not religious) created
a strict rule for the Roman soldiers not to marry and to be devoted to their
country only in between St. Valentine started marrying these soldiers in secret
Christian ceremonies and so St. Valentine due to this was considered to
advocate love as he gave importance of marrying the soldiers. Later he was
jailed but there too he did favor to the fellow prisoners and cured the blindness
of jailor’s daughter and wrote a love message to her before his execution and
was executed on 14th February in the year 270.
14TH FEBRUARY AS VALENTINE’S DAY
Not more than 200 years later14th. February was
proclaimed as Valentine’s Day. Later when Rome became Christian and the Catholic
Church stamped out paganism the Pagan fertility started ritual in February each
year but Pope abolished this ritual of Pagans on this day of 14th February
and proclaimed this day as Saint Valentine’s Day. 14th February was
established as a feast day on the catholic calendar of saints.
CHAUSER THE FAMOUS POET LINKED THE DAY WITH
ROMANTIC LOVE
The famous poet Chaucer in the middle age, linked St.
Valentine with Romantic love. This was the beginning of the tradition of
courtly love and admiration but secretly. This custom spread in Europe and
meetings were held on this day where people started reciting love poems and started
playing games of flirtation.
VALENTINE’S DAY SYMBOLS
Now on this day people have started sending love
messages to show how much they love the recipients. In some countries
Valentine’s Day is observed as a day of expressing love between family members
and friends instead of romantic couples.
Millions of flowers and cards are distributed on this
day. Among flowers Red Roses are considered to be symbol of love. Earlier it
started as a secret message of love but now it is open and popular among the
youths and is the fashion of declaring their love and messages through
beautiful cards and red flowers exchanged between love birds.
CONCLUSION
Many of the couples and love birds celebrate this day by choosing dinner dates at hotels and restaurants which offer them special Valentine’s Day Dinner with hearts, flowers and other romantic decoration specially designed for this day. Many marriage proposals are also made on this day. On this day even marriage proposals are made very creatively, romantically and are made memorable. To conclude it’s a beautiful day of expressing love to your partner, friend, family, parents and fellow people.
