TAJ MAHAL WHITE WONDER OF THE WORLD
Taj Mahal, is an immense ivory-white marble mausoleum in Agra city of Utter Pradesh India on the right bank of the river Yamuna. Mughal emperor Shah Jahan ordered Taj to be built between 1632 to1653 to house the tomb of his favourite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Later his tomb also housed there. Its architectural style is Mughal. Its architect was Ustad Ahmad Lahori, who was a Persian architect and it is said about him to be the chief architect of the Taj Mahal in Agra, India.
A FAMOUS STORY OF SHAH JAHAN
AND MUMTAZ
Mumtaz Mahal was Shah Jahan’s third wife, and was earlier known by the name Arjumand Bano Begum. Mumtaj Mahal died in 1631.She lost her life while giving birth to her 14th child from Shah Jahan. The dead body of Mumtaz was placed at the Banks of River Yamuna. Shah Jahan promised to construct the Taj Mahal over her grave. Even Shah Jahan’s dead body was laid beside Mumtaz Tomb. Their love made this beautiful monument a symbol of love which is one of the Seven Wonders of the World. This funerary mosque was built to perpetuate the memory of Shah Jahan’s favourite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Shah Jahan’s other wives and his favourite servants are also buried outside in the same complex.
Taj Mahal is made
of white marble. It costed at that time 32 million Rupees. In spite of its Muslim origin this white marble necropolis
has become the actual symbol of India. Taj Mahal, the white wonder is constructed
in an area of 42 acres. The main building of Taj Mahal stands on a
platform having a height of 50 meters. The four minarets having the height of
137 feet and the height of the tomb is 58 meters. Its four minarets are tilted
outwards to protect the main tomb in case of falling of any calamity. Taj Mahal is 73m
tall and is taller than Qutub Minar. Taj Mahal can be seen from Jasmine Tower
of Agra’s Red Fort where Shah Jahan was imprisoned by his son Aurangzeb.
Taj Mahal is amongst India’s most visited tourist attractions. Taj Mahal is displaying a beautiful blend of Islamic, Persian and Indian architecture. This historic and unique marvel was built in over 22 years, with the help of more than 20,000 workers. Arms of its arcticians were cut off to make sure that no such monument was ever rebuilt again.1000 elephants were employed in its construction to transfer the construction material from one place to another. The material for the construction of Taj Mahal was brought from Punjab, Rajasthan, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, China, Tibet and Arabia.
28 types of
precious and semi-precious stones were used to adorn Taj Mahal. During the
Sepoy Rebellion(mutiny) of 1857 some British soldiers took away its precious
stones from the wall of Tombs. Depending upon the time of the day, weather and in
moonlit night, the Taj Mahal appears to be of different colours and shades. One
can see different verses of Quran written everywhere inside its complex.
The Taj Mahal was
concealed by Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) during World War -II and war
of India and Pakistan in 1971 to protect it. This monument of India is world
famous and UNESCO too has classified Taj Mahal as one of the wonders of the
world.
