BIRTH STORY BY A.J.CRONIN-A REVIEW

A.J Cronin writer of this story Birth was a doctor by profession. He was a  master of narrative skill, observation and in a graphic description. He drew the subject of this story from his medical career itself. Birth by A.J Cronin is a wonderful story of a doctor who was having a very disappointing evening with his beloved Christine whom he loved passionately it was the end of their relationship.

Dr. Andrew receives a call from Jeo Morgan to deliver their first child after twenty years of marriage. The middle aged couple restlessly awaits Dr. Andrew .Dr. Andrew agrees to accompany them. Reaching there Dr. finds still some time for the baby's arrival. In between Mrs. Morgan's mother reveals their burning desire for the child and requests him not to administer chloroform to her daughter Susan if it would harm the child. 

Dr. Andrew assures her of its harmlessness and asks the nurse to attend Mrs. Morgan. On being called by the nurse he rushes to Mrs. Morgan's room. The baby arrives after an hour with a lot of difficulty. Dr. Andrew was exhausted and was shocked too see that the condition of the child as well as the mother was not good.

He was torn between the almost gone child and the sinking mother. Dr. Andrew focuses his attention first on mother. His feverish efforts succeed in restoring Mrs. Morgan. The condition of the child was hopeless the nurse has already dumped the child under the bed but the doctor asks the Nurse for the child .Dr. Andrew doesn't give up and madly and alternately puts the child in hot water and cold water to revive it back. He later presses the chest of the child presses and releases the tiny chest of the the new born .

Contrary to the expectations of Dr. Andrew and the Nurse miraculously the child revives giving much relief to the doctor. The exhausted doctor breaks the happy news to the Morgan Family. After two decades of their marriage they were blessed with a child. Dr. Andrew leaves experiencing a thrilling joy of having done something real at last but with the pain of his broken relation with his beloved last evening.

The story BIRTH centres around the character of Dr. Andrew who is young man and i s struggling to establish his career as a practitioner and now was broken by his beloved but still he has never say die attitude.

The precious gift of life which only God grants but a doctor can restore. Quite raw in medical field the young doctor's efforts, determination, strong will power and a humane approach succeeds in saving two lives.
